The CSty ' meeting last jiight was pretty well attendedand considerable interest "was manifested., ....; At about half past 7 o'clock the meeting wag oTBanized by calling Jno. N. Washington, Esq., miftir. and Spenceb, Esq., to the Secretary's desk. ;, ' . v '. I The Chairman explained the object of the meeting to be, tonominate jsnitable candidates for Mayor and jCouncilmenat, the approaching municipal election. . ...', Mr. Johnson H, Bbxan insisted that its objecjfc was merely to nominate & candidate for Mayor. Mr. Z. StADis thought it entirely competent to nominate Councilmen, as a City ineetrng' could hardly be assembled, without the wards all being -represented. 1 -v- ;-;.;.; The Chairman said that , he did, not know the object of the meeting only as he had gotten it , from the party who had called it - -5 ' ; Mr, M. Pattebson then? arose and .sustained r the position of the Chair, and dTOcated warmly the nomination of the wnoie Jioard. lie called. for. the reading of the call in the morning paper, which seemed also to corroborate the position prst assumed. - . . - -,'. t This question being settled, on motion of Mr. M. Patteeson, the Chair appointed Messrs. S. S. Dunrr James E. MoeeisL ' M.irrEBS0Nr' J. Ij. Oabdneb, Henet B. Bbtan and Z. Slade, a com jaittee to make the nominations. ! Fending the deliberations of the committee our reporter" adjourned, and tonsequently, we are unable to give the names - of the geatlemea se lected. Shall do so in our next. , , Mobx Bamks. We learned last'evenlng from a gentleman just from Kaleigh, that the Finance or Bank Committee to whom the subject of the banking interest in our State had been referred, have reported ' favorably to ' the scheme of the GoTernor, in his late message,, of, changing the stocks ox capital so invested, into the : National banking system. We are glad to hear this for it is certainly the speediest and most judicious' Way. f -of reclaiming the lost fortunes of the banks and I offers means of the most certain an,d speed re lief to the public i .' S ,."S !W Chanoxd Otm Mind. We mentioned casually in our last issue, that it might be a question, whether Judge MAUiiT could hold the office of Mayor and his. seat in the Legislature at the same time. But upon further examination of the sub ject, we are convinced that we were in error. The office of Mayor or Councilman in a city is an office of a private and not a public character like that of a President or Director in a railroad or banking corporation, and, hence, would offer no impediment to the holding of a public office. , Hxr Last Appkabakck. To-night is the bene fit and last appearance of the popular lyric ar tiste, Madame Caklotta Pozzom. By particu lar request, the beautiful drama "Colleen Bawn," so effectively rendered last week, will be repeat ed. Inasmuch gas this will be the last time Mme. P. will appear on our boards, we bespeak for her, a parting benefit which she will long re member. There are, those in the city who should not forget her claims on this 'occasion, but W member her efforts to while away the heavy hours of the winter evenings. ." A - - i Fas.
